Hand-Making the Signature Envelope Necklace

There were a few things that were incredibly important to me when it came to producing the By Leahy Signature Envelope Necklace.

One, is that it had to be handmade in Ireland.
We have such a wealth of talent and creativity in Ireland and the jewellery trade is no different. I get such a delight in meeting new suppliers and trades-people. Building relationship with them has been a very enjoyable part of the whole experience for me... Whether it's Barry, or Johnny, or Paddy that I'm dealing with, they've all been incredibly helpful and supportive in helping me to develop each piece in the collection.

The second point of importance is that the Signature Envelope Necklace be as personal and as hand-crafted as possible. It may be a laborious process to bring it from wax-carving to mould-making and right up to it's last high-polish, but I started off with a love for hand-making jewellery and I delight in every item of jewellery that I bring from start to finish on my bench.

Let me walk you through the making process that goes into the By Leahy cornerstone piece - the Signature Envelope Necklace...

The Signature Envelope Necklace started life by being slowly and meticulously hand-carved in wax.

The delicate wax carving was then transformed into a master mould from which each Signature Envelope Necklace is now individually produced. But the hand-making process doesn't stop there...

Once cast in precious metal, each Signature Envelope Necklace – which comes in three parts, the lid, the body and the little slip inside – has to be assembled and brought from a raw cast state to a gleaming high-polish.

It takes approximately four hours to complete each necklace.
Once they are given their final file and first polish, they are assembled by inserting a 0.7mm wire through the hinges connecting the lid to the base. They are then brought through their workings to ensure they open and close easily, but snuggly.

The inner slip is inserted and the chain is attached. I make all of the jump rings (the loops that connect the Signature Envelope Necklace to the chain) from the same wire that is used in the hinges.

Once the  necklace is complete it goes through a series of polishes to bring it to it's final high-polish finish. Each necklace is gently washed in warm water to remove the polishing grit. Lastly, it is cleaned with a polishing cloth.

By Leahy Fine Jewellery Sterling Silver Hallmark

As part of the process each necklace is stamped with the official seal of approval – a hallmark by the Assay Office nestled away on the grounds of Dublin Castle. The hallmark guarantees the purity and quality of the precious metal so that you are reassured that when you buy an 18ct gold, 9ct gold, or sterling silver necklace from By Leahy, that is exactly what you are getting.
(You'll see the hallmark on the base of the Sterling Silver  necklace above).
Last but not least...
When each Signature Envelope Necklace is ready to exit the bench it is placed in a deluxe matt-white gift box and ribboned with a soft cotton-linen bow. The gift is presented in a mini matching gift bag with cotton-soft handles. The gift wrapping is 100% recyclable.

You'll also get a little card telling the story behind each Signature Necklace and helpful tips on how to care for the piece. Every item is shipped securely by registered post so that you can track the parcel en route to the recipient.
